My name is Father Mario Basque; I am originally from Caraquet, New Brunswick. I come from a French Acadian family of 15 children. I have been in Alberta since 1980. At one time I was a soldier, security guard, bouncer and prison guard. I also have been an E.M.T. and Registered Nurse prior to becoming a Priest.
I was involved in the University of Calgary Catholic Community for ten years as a layman and was involved in the Live-In Retreat Movement and the Charismatic Renewal, giving talks, spiritual counseling and leadership training. I was ordained on July 19, 2002 and became Associate Pastor of St. Peter’s Parish (Sliver Springs) in Calgary on August 1, 2002 until August 1, 2004. On August 1, 2004 I was sent to Holy Family Parish in Medicine Hat as an Associate Pastor for two years.
Since August 1, 2006, I was made Pastor of St. Anthony’s Parish in Drumheller where I am currently situated.
I was assigned to be the Diocesan Chaplain for CWL in the fall of 2010. I am taking over this position from Father Edmund Vargas, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Calgary. I am happy to take on this position of Spiritual Advisor for the CWL at the Diocesan level.
I am looking forward to working with all you. I am learning on how to be a CWL Chaplain and with your help and support, I am sure it will be a smooth transition.
Thank you, and may God pour his blessings and protection upon all of you.
Your brother in Christ,
Father Mario Basque
